UTaNRMP engaged a consult to undertake a study to determine causes of low youth participation in development activities and to identify the suitable opportunities to support them through the Project. The Target of the study was youth in the upper Tana catchment area. This included all out-of-school  but jobless youth as defined in the National Youth Policy and also including those generally defined as “ unemployed youth”  , all cross sections of the youth population ie. Male, female and vulnerable populations in this targeted area from the vast project stakeholders, especially those working closely in the four project components (projects as promotion of youth private enterprise, community common interest groups (CIGs), Water Resources User Associations (WRUAs), Community Forest Associations (CFAs), religious organizations among others. The study was expected to provide understanding to the project on;

  • The causes of low you participation in target project activities and development activities in the region in general,
  • To determine the role served by the youth in development of the communities in the target counties. Further to identify how the UTaNRMP project can productively engage the youth in their circumstances in project implementation within the four (4) project components of interest,
  • To identify options and opportunities available for enhanced youth participation and finally,
  • Based on identified opportunities and gaps, recommend appropriate approaches and strategies that would work to enhance the participation of Youth and other vulnerable groups in the target counties.

A stakeholder validation workshop for the draft report was held at Mulathankari Multi-purpose Development Training Institute in Meru County on Thursday 15th June 2017. Participants in the workshop were drawn from the project’s steering committee, project coordination teams, county project facilitation teams, and community representatives who included youth leaders.
