The Upper Tana Catchment Natural Resources Management Project (UTaNRMP) had the pleasure of hosting the IFAD president Dr. Alvaro Lario on Tuesday 2nd May 2023. The IFAD President was accompanied by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture And Livestock Development Hon. Mithika Linturi and Her Excellency Cecily Mbarire, the Governor of Embu. The delegation visited two community projects supported by UTaNRMP and interacted with the beneficiary farmers.

At Karimari Rutune Community Irrigation water project in Nginda ward, Manyatta Sub-County, the delegation witnessed how IFAD and GoK’s support to project beneficiaries through UTaNRMP was contributing to food security, transforming rural livelihoods as well as building resilience in the small scale farmers against climate change.

The delegation later visited a forest conservation site where GoK/IFAD supported Njukiiri Community Forest Association (CFA) to rehabilitate sections of Njukiiri forest through the Plantation Establishment and Livelihood Improvement Scheme (PELIS).

PELIS is a forest management approach that helps to increase forest cover and restore degraded forests. Members of the Community Forest Association (CFA) benefit from PELIS through allocation of portions of land to practice agriculture on condition that they plant and nurture seedlings in the allocated plots until the seedlings form a closed canopy. 100 hectares of degraded section of Njukiiri forest have been rehabilitated with support from UTaNRMP through PELIS.
